Powerful Earthquake Hits Tibet And Leaves 53 Killed

Tremors were felt as far away as northern India and Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Many people were also hurt.

According to Chinese officials, a powerful earthquake in Tibet has killed at least 53 people. Also left several others trapped and injured.

Dozens of aftershocks rocked the western Chinese territory and the neighboring state of Nepal. The official Xinhua News Agency reported that 62 people were injured in Tuesday’s earthquake. The citing of the regional disaster relief headquarters.

So yet, no casualties have been reported in Nepal. However, a local official told Reuters that police and other security services had been called in to gather data on the earthquake’s effects.

Earthquakes have been common in Nepal and the southwestern regions of China.

In the last five years, 29 earthquakes with magnitudes of three or higher have occurred within 200 kilometers (124 miles) of the Shigatse quake epicenter. All of which were smaller than the most recent, according to Chinese broadcaster CCTV.

In 2008, a massive earthquake in China’s Sichuan province claimed around 70,000 lives.

The deadliest earthquake in Nepal, measuring 7.8. This occurred in 2015 close to Kathmandu, killing over 9,000 people and injuring thousands more.
