A Delhi court on Monday postponed its decision in the 1984 anti-Sikh riot case against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar. This riot involved the killing of two people in the Saraswati Vihar neighborhood. Until January 8 of the following year.

The verdict will now be handed on January 8. According to Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, who was supposed to deliver it.

Kumar, who is incarcerated for life in Tihar Jail in connection with another anti-Sikh riot case. This made an appearance in court via video conference.

Following the hearing of the closing arguments in the case pertaining to the November 1, 1984, murders of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh. Special Judge Baweja reserved the verdict.

The case was filed by the Punjabi Bagh police station. The investigation was later taken up by a special investigation team.

The court found a “prima facie” case against Kumar and framed charges against him on December 16, 2021.

The prosecution claims that in order to exact revenge for the murder of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It was a sizable mob equipped with lethal weapons engaged in widespread looting, burning, and property destruction against Sikhs.

According to the prosecution, the mob attacked the plaintiff, Jaswant’s wife, and killed her husband and kid in addition to stealing items and setting their home on fire.

The court judgment, which put Kumar on trial, concluded that there was enough evidence to establish a “prima facie opinion that he was not only a participant, but had also led the mob.”

Following the assassination of then-prime minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984, anti-Sikh riots erupted, killing almost 3,000 people, primarily Sikhs.

Kumar (79) has been incarcerated since December 31, 2018, when he turned himself in after the Delhi High Court found him guilty and sentenced him to life in prison in a different case involving the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the Raj Nagar Part-I area at Palam Colony in South West Delhi, where a gurdwara was set on fire in Raj Nagar Part-II and five Sikhs were killed on November 1-2, 1984. He has been denied bail by the Supreme Court.
