It was one of the few times Lionel Messi entered a soccer field unaware of what was going on.
More than 250 players from the Inter Miami program were present, and they formed a shape in the middle that spelled out the three letters MVP. Messi also noticed that his kids were holding a trophy when he spotted them.
Messi found out he was the top player in Major League Soccer in 2024 in this way.
Despite missing 15 of Inter Miami’s 34 regular-season games due to injuries or Argentina’s national team duties, Messi is still the MLS MVP.
He contributed to the highest rate per 90 minutes in MLS history, scoring 20 goals and dishing out 16 assists, for a league-high 36 goals.
Messi told the academy players, “It is truly an honor for me to receive this award from all of you.”
The vote results were made public by MLS on Friday. Messi won the award, which was decided by a survey of players, club technical staff, and a few members of the media, defeating Columbus Crew forward Cucho Hernndez.
Messi was favored by 41% of players and 43% of the media. Hence Hernndez was narrowly preferred by club voters.
“It’s hard to imagine the overall appeal and the massive popularity and stardom that Leo Messi has unless you’re living in the world of global football,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber, who was also present at Inter Miami’s stadium for the surprise MVP award on Wednesday night, stated.
