Google removed its pledge for not building AI for weapons or surveillance from the website this week. This change was first spotted by Bloomberg. The company appears to have updated versions of Its Public AI principles page while erasing the section tiled as “applications we will not pursue,”.
The company pointed to a new blog post about “responsible AI” as the answer. There is also a note about this matter where written as
“We believe that companies, governments, and organizations sharing these values should work together to create AI that protects people, promotes global growth, and supports national security.”
Google’s freshly updated AI principles note the company will work to “mitigate unintended or harmful outcomes and avoid unfair bias,”. This also aligns with the company’s “widely accepted principles of international law and human rights.”
The recent years Google’s contracts to provide the U.S. and Israeli militaries with cloud services have sparked internal protests from the employees. The company maintained that AI is not used to harm humans. The Pentagon’s AI chief recently talked about some of the company’s AI models and how they can speed up the US military kill chain.
