Following criticism from conservative activists, Walmart, the largest retailer in the world, is joining an increasing number of large firms in reversing their diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.
Walmart announced the extensive changes on Monday, which range from withdrawing from a well-known homosexual rights index to not renewing a five-year pledge for an equality racial center established in 2020 following the police killing of George Floyd. Additionally, Walmart will not give suppliers preferential treatment based on their gender or color.
Walmart’s actions highlight the pressure on corporate America amid the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action in college admissions. Conservative groups have filed lawsuits targeting workplace diversity programs and hiring practices. Robby Starbuck has called out companies, including Ford, Harley-Davidson, Lowe’s, and Tractor Supply.
Walmart plans to monitor third-party marketplace items to avoid sexual and transgender products for minors, including chest binders for youth. The company will also review Pride event grants to prevent financially supporting inappropriate content. Walmart will no longer use race and gender as a quota for supplier contracts and will not gather demographic data for financing eligibility.
The Company said
“We’ve been on a journey and know we aren’t perfect, but every decision comes from a place of wanting to foster a sense of belonging, to open doors to opportunities for all our associates, customers and suppliers and to be a Walmart for everyone,”
Walmart has made policy changes following former President Trump’s election, which criticized DEI initiatives. The company has shifted from using “DEI” in job titles and communications to “belonging” and made changes to its supplier program following the Supreme Court affirmative action ruling.
